They start having bad dreams and puts all their jewelry into it and it enhances the jewelry, whatever is put into it, comes to life. It is invested with some sort of spirit. The goal is to figure out the combination of jewels to spawn a ry that is able to form a spirit halo that is blessed and not cursed. Not knowing the blessed halo looks just the same as the cursed halo and so it is as if they see a cursed halo when it is blessed because they see what they will deserve and not what they will get through the individual has the only blessed Halo.
